Advocate pushes to help Gulfport seniors with home repair needs

GULFPORT, Overlook. (WLOX) – Seems can be deceiving.

Mary Mann of Gulfport and her late spouse worked extended and tricky to make a lovely residence.

But an hideous truth of the matter is not far absent.

The 84-12 months-aged has been attempting for at least a year to get leaking roof fixed, together with the interior hurt it has triggered, but the typical social protection nets have not been effective.

“It just would seem like nobody cares,” she stated. “Nobody cares. I just do not know wherever to turn.”

For now, she’s using pots to capture the drip in her kitchen and her rest room.

“It rains in there. I won’t say leak. It rains.”

And that’s not all. Her kitchen sink is worthless due to the fact of drainage difficulties.

“I want to get things corrected prior to they get even worse,” Mann said.

Also in Gulfport, the property of Nancy Evans exhibits what care and time can do to make a great house. But within, the house is sinking, and taking her security with it.

“You can hear the ground cracking,” she reported as she stepped on crumbling tile.

Flooding issues commenced the issue, and she said Hurricane Zeta created it worse. Estimates for repairs are about $55,000. Which is dollars she simply just cannot pay for.

“If I have to shift, I would,” she said. “But, I hope and pray that I never have to transfer.”

She’s sought support from the town and from quite a few organizations, but so considerably, she mentioned, practically nothing has worked.

“I’m calling out and praying that anyone will enable me and hear to my problems,” Evans claimed. “But, I’m not going to quit. I begun it and I’m heading to complete it.”

Both females have observed an advocate – or relatively – Christene Brice found them, and a whole lot a lot more.

“I have a notebook with all these various senior citizens in here,” Brice reported thumbing by the paperwork. “Eighty-eight many years aged, 84 many years outdated, 79 yrs old, 75 decades outdated, 90 years outdated.”

“She’s a caring female,” Mann said of Brice. “She cares about folks. And I thank God for her.”
